Unique mosaics from the second half of the 4th century AD and frescoes from the 10th and 11th century were discovered by archaeologists during excavations of the Large Basilica on Maria Luisa Blvd in Plovdiv.

“The discovery exceeded all expectations,” stated the head of the team Zheni Tankova.

Medallions with peacocks and birds on the floor coverings are among the findings. A total of 300 sq m of the ancient mosaics have already been uncovered.

Besides these, archaeologists have discovered small dishes and frescoes depicting a man with a beard who appears to resemble St Peter.

The erection of a building ensuring protective cover will begin in 2017.
