“With respect to Brexit, everyone was surprised, including our British friends. We are obliged to give them a chance to consider their position. It is not clear exactly what the British government wants,” said at a press conference Bulgarian President Plevneliev.

After meeting his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, Plevneliev added: “The EU has not just one but several problems to solve."

"Our appeal will be for this not to distract us from other important strategic issues. Together with President Mattarella, we are of the opinion that it will be good to start new integration projects. I am anxious about the fact that nationalists and populists roam freely in European capitals. I am looking for stable solutions for Bulgaria and for Europe. I know that a solution cannot be stable if it is an anti-European one. Migration, unemployment and terrorism do not recognise borders and cannot be resolved within the framework of the isolation of one single country,” stated Pleveneliev.
