Bulgaria's city of Plovdiv is planning to exhibit almost 2 000 sq. m. of mosaics from the large V c. bishop basilica, said city mayor Ivan Totev.

The colour mosaics of 70 different kinds of birds, which are in very good condition, will be exhibited on two levels in a special building over the basilica remains. It is due to be open for visitors by the summer of 2017.

According to Totev, archaeological and restoration teams are ready to start work on the mosaics as soon as this November.

The project would cost around BGN 4.9 M and will include a small 3D model of the basilica, multimedia and additional exhibition and events space.

The funding is provided by the America For Bulgaria foundation.

So far Plovdiv City Hall has invested BGN 0.5 M for buying off the land above the basilica.

The Large Basilica of Philippopolis was uncovered in the 1980's during the construction of a boulevard across Plovdiv's centre. It was dated early V c. AD and was supposedly used by the town's bishop.

Currently part of it lies beneath the city boulevard, but the uncovered parts will be included in the project.
