At a time when world leaders call for restraint and an upholding of the non-guilty presumption, French PM Francois Fillon has stated that IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn cannot be forgiven if he actually sexually attacked a woman.

"If the accusations are confirmed, then we will be facing a very serious case for which there is no justification," pre-emptively said Fillon Tuesday at a closed-door meeting with French MPs.

Fillon is the most high-ranking French official to comment - albeit non-officially - the Sunday New York arrest and criminal charge against Strauss-Kahn regarding the alleged rape of a maid in a luxury hotel he was staying in.

Fillon is a representative of France's Union for a Popular Movement, the party led by president Nicolas Sarkozy, who himself has not commented the case.

IMF director Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a key figure of the French Socialist Party, was seen as the possible candidate with the greatest chances to defeat Sarkozy in the upcoming presidential elections in France 2012.

As things stand now, the New York developments cast deep shadows over Strauss-Kahn's potential candidacy to become France's president.
