Bulgaria's world-famous Panagyurishte gold treasure dating back to Thracian times is to be displayed at the Archeology Museum in the second largest city of Plovdiv.

The treasure will travel there on the occasion of the completion of renovation works at the Museum and will remain on display for two months under heightened security and behind armored windows.

The official opening ceremony is scheduled for October 12. In two months, the treasure will be returned to the National History Museum in Sofia to be prepared for an exhibit in the US.

The nine unique gold artefacts, seven wine rhytons, an amphora and a food dish, have already been displayed in Paris, Basel, Switzerland, Brussels, Japan, and a number of other places around the world.

The artefacts reveal the virtuosity of ancient goldsmiths, who have reached the pinnacle of arts. The treasure is a witness to a particularly brilliant civilization and impress with their decorative richness.

It was reported meanwhile that the Plovdiv Mayor, Slavcho Atanasov, has declared the Treasure belongs to his city, and must be permanently displayed there with Culture Ministrer, Vezhdi Rashidov, on his part, threatening the Mayor with legal action should he decide to keep the artefacts.
