Stealing cables to sell them as scrap metal has been a not infrequent practice in Bulgaria. Photo by BGNES.

Bulgarian police arrested at least three persons engaged in stealing of cables who had inadvertently caused havoc in the internet connection between Asia and Europe, reported News.bg.

The group, operating nearby Yambol in southern Bulgaria, had dug a hole last Wednesday in a bid to uncover cables that can be sold for scrap metal, but actually tore a 26 optical fibers cable transmitting information, including bank and related data, from Germany to Asia.

This caused an interruption of the international connection for at least 10 hours, at the cost of nearly EUR 1 M.

Yambol police reacted quickly and uncovered the alleged perpetrators, who were fully geared with the equipment needed for their activities.

Police were aware of them and had kept them under surveillance for about a month.
