A young child was saved in a high-risk rescue operation in Yambol after being spotted hanging from the outside of a balcony railing on the eighth floor of a residential building in the “Golden Horn” district. The signal was filed shortly after 1:30 p.m., when witnesses noticed the boy, estimated to be around 2 to 3 years old, standing precariously on the outer edge and holding on with one hand. According to police officers who arrived on site, the situation was critical, with the child exposed to an immediate risk of falling.

One of the first responders, junior inspector Martin Petrov, managed to reach the scene through a neighboring apartment after access was provided by residents. Balancing himself with difficulty, he secured the child with one hand to prevent movement while waiting for his colleagues to assist. A blanket had been prepared below in case the boy fell. As the apartment door was locked and no one responded, officers forced entry in order to reach the terrace from inside. Additional officers, including Ivaylo Dimitrov, Ivan Topalov, Milena Andreeva and Petar Oblakov, joined the effort. Once inside, they carefully approached and pulled the child back to safety.

During the operation, it became clear that the boy was not alone. A second child, a girl under two years old, was found inside the apartment, left unattended in a stroller. Police later confirmed that there were no adults present at the time of the incident. The rescue itself involved significant personal risk, with one of the officers stabilizing the child while positioned externally, ensuring he did not lose balance before help arrived. Colleagues described the situation as extremely dangerous and credited the quick reaction for preventing a fatal outcome.

Following the incident, social services representatives arrived, and both children were examined and found to be in good physical condition, though visibly distressed. According to officers, the rescued boy was in shock, unable to speak and visibly frozen after the ordeal. Authorities identified the parents, who were subsequently detained for up to 24 hours, while the prosecutor’s office was informed and is expected to assess possible charges related to leaving the children without supervision.

The children were immediately removed from the family environment as a precautionary measure and placed in foster care, each with a different family. A coordination mechanism for children at risk has been convened and is expected to determine the next steps regarding their future care and protection.
