Heavy rain and sleet have affected many regions across Bulgaria, but the Black Sea city of Burgas has been hardest hit by the extreme weather conditions.

A 23-year-old man has been killed in a traffic accident on Monday afternoon, it has been announced. The car in which he was a passenger had overturned because of the wet road surface.

His father, the driver of the car, escaped injury, but the other passenger, the youth’s mother, suffered head and chest injuries, and was taken to the emergency trauma ward at a Burgas hospital.

In the city, the civil emergency services of the city have evacuated 17 people from a flooded subway on Monday. Seven cars have also been trapped in flood water, and their occupants have been rescued by boat.

The National Road Infrastructure Agency has warned of the need for caution on the roads of the Burgas region. Sections of road between Tambol and Sredets, and Kableshkovo and Aheloy are under 10 cms of water, and the roads will be closed if necessary.

The Agency also warned travellers of the danger of falling rocks on some sections of the road between Provaida and Aitos.

Temporary one-way traffic restrictions have been put in place between Aheloy and Pomorie, where the road has been undermined as a result of the heavy rain and flooding. These have affected traffic in Sunny Beach and Slanchev Bryag.

The port of Varna was closed when high winds were recorded at speeds of up to 23,5 meters per second. Rainfall in the city was measured at 25 liters per square meter.

Haskovo has also been adversely affected by the severity of the weather. The emergency services have been pumping water out of many flooded ground floors and basements.

The main streets of the town had been turned into rivers, causing massive traffic jams, and disruption to urban parking lots.

In the south western town of Blagoevgrad, a thunderstorm caused flooding, with over 50 liters per square meter of rain falling within the space of two hours. The situation in Vidin and surrounding villages has been similarly reported.
