Popular UK new wave band Depeche Mode announced Thursday evening that they are canceling their May 18 concert in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

The news, reported on the band's official site www.depechemode.com, came as a big disappointment to all their Bulgarian fans, who have been anticipating the performance for months already.

Three years ago, Depeche Mode performed at the "Locomotive" stadium in Sofia before a crowd of 40 000.

Earlier Thursday, Depeche Mode announced the cancellation of their concert in Istanbul, Turkey.

The band issued a statement announcing that it was a "severe bout of gastroenteritis" that sent lead singer Dave Gahan to hospital.

Gahan's illness forced the band to cancel their concert in Athens, Greece on Tuesday.

On the site, Depeche Mode apologize to all their fans for this inconvenience and wish Dave a speedy recovery.

The May 16th Bucharest, Romania, the May 20th Belgrade, Serbia, and the May 21st Zagreb, Croatia, shows have also been canceled.

The site advises ticket holders to hold on to their tickets as an announcement will be made shortly in regard to rescheduled dates or final cancellation.
