Bulgaria’s Chief Health Inspector: Soon We Will Have Effective Drug against Coronavirus

"In one or two months we will have a very effective drug against coronavirus. Several huge companies are spending incredible funds to develop this new drug. Some of them are very close to delivering it. The vaccine and the medicine don't exclude each other. If we have a powerful tool to use in hospitals and largely solve the problem of severe course of disease, it will be of great help. It's probably going to be very expensive," said State Chief Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev said for "Hello, Bulgaria" talk show.

He reminded that the EC is already negotiating the supply of vaccines for 2022. Kunchev stressed that there have been no discarded vials of vaccine at any immunization site in the country. During the Easter holidays "green corridors" for vaccination will be open and there will be teams on duty from the regional health inspectorates to ensure that all site have sufficient vaccine supply. On Monday, more vaccines will arrive in Bulgaria, which will be distributed immediately, Kunchev announced.

"Everyone will have access to a vaccine, no matter whether they are health insured or not. A lot of people, to my pleasant surprise, decided to complete immunization with a second dose of AstraZeneca's vaccine," he said.

"We don't know anything about the Indian strain. There is no reliable scientific data on what its characteristics are. There must be something special about itto infect 300,000 people a day and cause 4,000 deaths, although conditions in India contribute to such a development. The imposition of measures will not stop its spread, it will only slow it down, as it happened with the Nigerian and British strains. When we know what its peculiarities are, we will inform colleagues how to deal with it", Kunchev said.
