Bulgaria to Expand Harmanli Refugee CentreBulgaria in EU | August 26, 2016, Friday // 13:23| views
The refugee centre in Harmanli, in southeastern Bulgaria, will be expanded to accommodate a further 400 people amidst an increase in the number of migrants entering the country, public radio BNR reported on Friday.
The government’s State Agency for Refugees has called a BGN 1.6 M (EUR 800,000) public tender for the procurement of 68 new shipping container houses, the construction of a water and sewerage system, as well as a video surveillance system, BNR said.
The new housing will increase the centre's accomodation capacity to some 3,000 inhabitants.
Bugaria faces a December deadline to absorb the EU funding for the project.
About 1,000 migrants and refugees are residing at the centre at present – a fivefold increase compared with June. Between 50 and 60 migrants and refugees arrived daily in the centre last week.
Nationalist VMRO party has planned protest action against the planned expansion of the refugee centre which has alarmed locals, BNR said.
Meanwhile, 650 new irregular migrants have been found on Bulgarian territory over the past week, BNR said citing Interior Ministry data. This takes to 12,000 the overall number recorded since the start of 2016.
