Bulgaria believes that Europe can tackle the crises it faces only through concerted and long-term measures, Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov has said.

Cooperation between EU member states and countries outside the bloc is essential, Mitov said after a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Central European Initiative (CEI) held in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on Thursday.

“Good communication between our economies and markets, the sharing of information form the basis of prosperity for the region," he added, according to a statement issued by the foreign ministry in Sofia.

Daniel Mitov reiterated Bulgaria’s support for the EU enlargement and added that there is no alternative to cooperation and integration.

"Bulgaria has always supported and will support regional projects that develop and deepen cooperation between our countries", Mitov said.

Bulgaria, a CEI member since 1996, has implemented 59 projects in the course of its membership, co-financed with EUR 500,000 by the organisation.

The CEI ministers adopted a joint statement, in which they expressed concern about the situation in Ukraine which they estimated as a serious risk for the security in Europe. In this context, the ministers expressed full support for the implementation of the Minsk agreements as a basis for resolving the conflict, according to the statement.

Founded in 1989, the CEI is a regional intergovernmental forum committed to supporting European integration through cooperation among its Member States. It combines multilateral diplomacy and project management, both as donor and recipient, while bridging European macro-regions.
