Bulgaria has spent more than BGN 100 M on constructing the fence along the border with Turkey, which has not been fully completed yet.

The construction of the fence, which is aimed at halting the refugee influx towards the country, began two years ago.

So far, a total of BGN 102.3 M have been spent on the fence, but this is not the final cost as the construction has not been completed yet, daily Dnevnik informs.

The fence spans the territory of the regions of Haskovo, Yambol and Burgas.

A total of 95 kilometres of the fence have been constructed so far, with another 119 kilometres expected to be completed before the autumn.

In the beginning of 2015, the government decided to entrust regional governors with constructing the fence to speed up its completion.

The fence is being constructed without public procurement procedure after parliament changed the legislation. The MPs allowed for the fence to be constructed without tender as it is a facility of national security.

In the region of Haskovo, the projected length of the fence is 33 kilometres, with the half of it having been completed.

The government has allocated BGN 26.2 M for the section of the fence in the region.

A total of 26 kilometres of the fence have been completed in the region of Burgas, with another 32 kilometres expected to be completed by the middle of July.

Another nine kilometers are projected to be completed in three months, with the last section expected to be constructed before the autumn rains.

So far, BGN 56 M have been spent on erecting the fence in the region of Burgas.

In the region of Yambol, the fence was completed by the government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski.  A total of BGN 20 M were spent on the 35.9-kilometre section.
