The former speaker of the Bulgarian Parliament, Yordan Sokolov, died at the age of 83.

Sokolov served as the speaker of the 38th National Assembly between 1997 and 2001.

Prior to that, he was interior minister in the government of Filip Dimitrov between 1991 and 1992.

Sokolov was elected three times as an MP, namely in the 37th, 38th and 39th national assemblies.

The Bulgarian parliament observed a minute of silence in memory of him on Wednesday.

Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva identified him as a great Bulgarian jurist, politician and statesman.

In her words, Sokolov devoted his life to consolidating democratic values in Bulgaria as well as achieving the country’s progress and prosperity.

Tsacheva added that he will be remembered as one of the wise, mature and accountable politicians of the Bulgarian transition and as an honest and principled statesman.

She concluded by saying that his contribution to democratic progress and the European integration of Bulgaria will be always remembered.
