The mayors of Bulgaria's Burgas and Alexandroupoli in Greece discussed the possibility of launching railway and air connections between the two cities.

The mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, and his Greek counterpart Evaggelos Lampakis expressed concern about the continuing blockades on checkpoints along the Bulgarian-Greek border and the negative consequences suffered by both countries.

At their meeting, they considered the opportunities for launching a Saint Petersburg-Burgas-Alexandroupoli air connection which will be active during the charter season.

They also discussed the construction of a railway connection between Burgas and Alexandroupoli and in general extending the transport links between the two seaside tourist destinations.

The two mayors also commented the consequences of the blockades staged by Greek farmers protesting against planned increases to tax and pension contributions.

Nikolov highlighted that the Greek blockade is having exceptionally negative effect on the local economy as many firms from Burgas are using this transport corridor for exporting loads and goods.

The meeting was also attended by the deputy mayor of Burgas, Krasimir Stoychev and the director of the port of Burgas, Deyan Dimov, the website of the municipality informs.
