A freight trained derailed near the Bulgarian town of Dupnitsa shortly after midnight on Saturday as it was entering the railway station.

No people have been injured in the incident, but the derailment caused a considerable damage to the infrastructure.

Nine from the thirteen carriages of the train carrying more than 1000 tonnes of cement derailed, with some of the load spilling on the tracks.

The passage of passenger trains through the affected section has not been affected.

Representatives of the Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) Freight Services and the National Railway Infrastructure Company are examining the site to establish the causes of the incident.

According to some media reports the derailment was caused by high speed or faulty railway, while other versions suggest the incident occurred due to the cold weather.

A removal of the derailed carriages and repair of the infrastructure is forthcoming.
