Bulgaria looks at the forthcoming presidency of the Council of Europe as an opportunity to contribute to security in Europe, Prime Minister Boyko Borisov said at a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland in Sofia on Monday.

Jagland is on an official visit to Bulgaria. He discussed with Borisov the main points of the agenda of the Council of Europe, including the current migration crisis and the fight against radicalization leading to terrorism, the government’s press office said in a statement.

Borisov and Jagland agreed that Europe is facing new challenges, which require a joint search for solutions. Bulgaria will assume the six-month presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe next month.

A combination of active international cooperation and decisive national actions is key to the efficiency of the fight against terrorism, Borisov said.

He reiterated Bulgaria’s position that the lowering of tensions in conflict zones and support for institution-building as well as strengthening the rule of law and protection of human rights are needed to successfully address the issues of radicalization and violent extremism that can lead to terrorism.
