Nine Injured in Sofia-Istanbul Train Incident

Nine passengers, among them a Bulgarian woman were left injured after a locomotive hit the first carriage of a train from Sofia to Istanbul on Sunday evening, officials say.

The injured were promptly taken to hospital. They include Romanian, German, Spanish and Portuguese nationals.

The Bulgarian woman has the most serious injuries, but there is no threat to her life.

At a speed of 15-20 km, the locomotive was performing maneuvers to be attached to the train, the Bulgarian National Radio reports.

It is not known yet what caused the incident which occurred while the train had stopped at the railway station of Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second-biggest city.

The remaining 60 passengers were offered alternative transportation.
