Five people died as a car hit an electric pole, tumbling itself over and knocking the pole down in a southwestern Bulgarian village, police say.

The victims were the driver and four pedestrians whose bodies were smashed by the pole as they were crossing the street.

Two car passengers, aged 16 and 18, car passengers were thrown away by the impact and were taken to hospital with severe injuries, according to local Interior Ministry authorities.

Residents of Yahinovo, a village near the town of Dupnitsa, are quoted by Darik Radio as saying the one of the pedestrians, a woman, had been currently putting posters on the pole.

A 15-year-old is among the victims, a report by private national NOVA TV station reveals.

The driver is said to have been aged 18-20. Reportedly, he bought the car last week. Police information suggests the vehicle was speeding just before the impact.
