A child was killed on Saturday after being hit by a vehicle on the Todor Aleksandrov boulevard in the Bulgarian city of Burgas.

The vehicle, which hit the child, has not been identified yet as the driver did not stop and fled the crime scene, daily Dnevnik reports.

The child, who was a minor of Roma origin, was crossing the road lane at a place, which has not been designated as such.

Todor Aleksandrov is one of the busiest boulevards in Burgas, with three lanes in each direction in the area of the incident, where the speed limit is 80 km/h.

According to the local site Flagman, the child was hit by a black BMW, which did not attempt to stop as there were no skid marks.

The nine-year-old boy was crossing from the side of the Vaya lake to the industrial zone at the other side of the road.

The incident comes two days before the start of the initiatives under the UN Global Road Safety Week bearing the motto "Save Kids Lives".

In the past year in Bulgaria, 33 children became victims of road accidents, while 1056 were injured.
