Germanwings has issued a statement saying there were 144, and not 142, passengers on board its plane that went down in the French Alps.

The company, which is a subsidiary of German national carrier Lufthansa, is due to comment on the developments at 14:00 GMT.

On Twitter, it switched its logo to a black-and-white version and offered a cost-free phone number (0800 11 33 55 77) that could be used by relatives of passengers for more information.

This comes after transport officials announced there would most likely be no survivors.

Spanish King Felipe has decided to suspend the remainder of his first official visit following the crash of a Germanwings Airbus A320 in the French Alps which has claimed the lives of 45 Spaniards. Aviation authorities suggest there were also Turkish nationals.

The news was announced at a press conference of Felipe and French President Francois Hollande outside the Elysee Palace. Felipe VI arrived in the country about Tuesday noon, and learned there were Spanish citizens among passengers after landing in France.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to hold a press conference later on Tuesday, after Hollande confirmed "a significant number" of Germans were traveling on the plane which had taken off from Barcelona en route to D?sseldorf.
