France to Become Bolder, More Active in Fighting Еxtremism - Ambassador to Bulgaria

France will be bolder and more active in its policies against radical Islam, the country's ambassador to Bulgaria Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes said on Thursday.

Commenting on the bloody attack on French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo which claimed twelve lives on January 7, Wednesday, he asserted Paris would neither backtrack on its immigration policies nor on its defense of basic principles such as freedom of speech .

In an interview with the Bulgarian National Television, De Cabanes cited the example of the US, which in his words did not choose to hid after the 9/11 terror attack.

"Democracies under attack do not hide. On the contrary, they want to defend and stand up for their principles," he asserted.

The Ambassador dismissed any suggestions that the focus of comments about Wednesday's events should be on the impact of mass immigration on security in France.

"Terrorist from the 70s [in France] were a hundred percent French citizens and not of any other origin. It is not a good idea to start a debate based on the peril of migration."

The two suspects, Cherif and Said Kouachi, are of Algerian origin.

After being shown a Charlie Hebdo cartoon with an irreverent depiction of a naked Muslim and asked whether the newspaper had gone too far in its humor, De Cabanes said: "If caricatures are that insulting, one could refer to the court."
