Bulgaria’s government has removed Boyko Velikov from the post of Director of the Center for Prevention und Suppression of Corruption and Organized Crime (BORKOR) at the Council of Ministers at his request.

Eleonora Nikolova, who was Deputy Director of BORKOR, was appointed interim director of the unit, according to reports of the Bulgarian National Radio.

Velikov was appointed Director of BORKOR one year ago through a decision of the socialist-led government of Plamen Oresharski.

BORKOR was established in mid- 2010 as a specialized administrative body with analytical functions, according to reports of investor.bg.

The unit was tasked with implementing Bulgaria’s policy in the sphere of prevention and suppression of corruption and organized crime.

During the term in office of the Oresharski Cabinet, BORKOR faced the prospect of closure as Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev claimed that the unit was inefficient, taking into account the resources it was absorbing.
