Bulgarian Parliament to Discuss Anticorruption Law at First Reading

The Bulgarian Parliament will discuss at first reading the law on preventing corruption among high-level public officials on Friday.

The legislation has to guarantee that the fight against corruption will be conducted in a new way and through a new body.

The new law is a step foreseen in the anti-corruption strategy, which was adopted by the government in the beginning of the spring.

The new anti-corruption body will unite the Centre for Prevention and Countering Corruption and Organised Crime (BORKOR) to the Council of Ministers, the Commission for Prevention and Ascertainment of Conflict of Interest and departments of the National Audit Office.

The idea is for the new body to start functioning from 2016, daily Dnevnik informs.

The functions of the new body will be to check the asset and conflict of interest declarations, to conduct inspections in case of inconsistencies or when signal is submitted, to analyse the legislation, to propose anti-corruption measures, to develop honor systems, to conduct anti-corruption trainings and campaigns.

A national council on anti-corruption policies under the authority of the Council of Ministers is already existing.
