Bulgaria could use the situation with the South Stream project and secure the capacity to pump its own gas through the pipeline, Austrian daily Wirtschaftsblatt argues.

In an article called "Serbia Sitting Between Two Chairs" (rough translation from German), the outlet stressed the importance of South Stream for Southeast Europe, since Western Europe could more easily renounce the project due to its higher degree of energy security boosted by Nord Stream.

Reminding non-transparent procurement procedures for the construction in Bulgaria prompted the freeze of South Stream, the daily adds the project would pose a major difficulty to Serbia, a traditional ally to Russia which at the same time is under pressure to consider sanctions against Moscow.

Wirtschaftsblatt writes Bulgaria could come out as a winner of a renegotiating process which should rather be expected over South Stream, openly predicting it "would benefit" from new talks "in any case".

Though not elaborating, it hints to be referring to the opportunity offered by the EU's Third Energy Package, under which the same entity cannot supply gas and own the infrastructure to pump it across the bloc.
