EU Membership Should Be Promised to Ukraine - Poland FM

The European Union must make a clear commitment for the future membership of Ukraine, argued Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

"The EU made a mistake with not agreeing to give Ukraine EU membership perspectives in teh Association Agreement, and after the last events in Kiev, it must mend this mistake," said Poland's top diplomat in an interview.

"The Ukrainian side was interested in that and Poland was facilitating it during negotiations, but the decision taken by other member states made the impression that Ukraine is not wanted in the EU," added he.

According to Sikorski, Ukraine's EU perspective can be enshirned in a separate document, to be signed with the Association Agreement, which is currently being put under additional negotiations.

Ukraine decided to postpone signing the deal end of November, citing economic and financial reasons.

The move provoked large anti-government protests, which of late have gained new momentum.

Although the Association Agreement provided for strong market and regulatory harmonization between the EU and Ukraine, it did not state anything about an eventual membership of the country in the union.
