Half of Bulgarians Reluctant to Donate Organs

Almost 60 percent of Bulgarians will not consent to donating their organs, according to a nationwide representative survey.

The omnibus survey was carried out among 950 participants in June 2013. The data were presented to journalists by the head of the Executive Agency for Transplantation Dr. Mariana Simeonova, Tuesday, BTA reported.

Some 6% of the polled have declared their refusal to donate their organs. Over 70% said that they needed more information on the topic of organ donation and transplantation, as 54% of the polled said they learned about it from television.

About 62% of respondents are positive that they would consent to having an organ transplantation, another 33% were not certain of their answer.

Of all polled, 85% stated they belonged to Orthodox Christianity. Some 52% of respondents did not know whether their religion allows organ donation.

More than 70% of all participants in the survey said they would donate an organ to a member of their family.

A total of 25% of all respondents claimed they would donate an organ to a complete stranger.
