Iran was invited to Geneva-2, after intensive talks between UN leader Ban Ki-moon and foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, who agreed to attend the Syria peace talks.

Iran's involvement means that all the key countries linked to the worsening war in Syria will now be at the opening of the peace conference in Montreux, Switzerland on Wednesday.

The announcement by UN secretary general Ban, that he had invited Iran to Geneva-2 drew strong objections on Sunday from American officials, who suggested that Iran had not met all the conditions for attending and that the invitation might need to be withdrawn.

The so-called Geneva-2 conference is meant as a follow-up to one held in June 2012, where world powers issued a call for a Syrian transition government.
