Bulgaria's Tax Police Unit to Boost Collection by BGN 100 M in 2014

The new tax police unit is expected to boost tax collection by no less than BGN 100 M in 2014, according to Rosen Bachvarov, Spokesperson for Bulgaria's National Revenue Agency.

In a Thursday interview for the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), he claimed that the projected increase was expected to be achieved through the activities of the Fiscal Control unit created in 2013.

He specified that the higher collection rate was to be achieved by boosting receipts from indirect taxes and corporate taxes.

Bachvarov reminded that the Fiscal Control unit of the NRA had been tasked with monitoring imports of goods of high fiscal risk, especially agricultural output, grain, fruit and vegetables.

The NRA Spokesperson pointed out that the income tax campaign for 2013 had been launched on January 1, 2014.

He informed that around 17-18% of Bulgarians filed electronic tax statements, according to NRA data.

Bachvarov added that the share of legal persons which submitted tax statements online was much bigger.

He reminded that citizens who filed tax statements online by end-April were granted a 5% discount on the amount due.

The NRA Spokesperson explained that citizens who filed paper-based tax statements by February 10 also qualified for the 5% discount.

He emphasized that the most appropriate and most time-and-money-saving way of paying taxes, social security contributions, etc, was through the electronic payment option of the NRA website, adding that the service had been available for around 10 years.
