Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius has condemned the Ukrainian authorities' use of force against "peaceful demonstrators".

"The Ukrainian authorities are publicly demonstrating that they are ignoring the calls of EU and US representatives to refrain from using force", stated Linkevicius in an official statement.

Despite the presence of EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton in Kiev, Ukrainian riot police used force during the night to disperse demonstrating crowds on Independence Square.

"The actions of the Ukrainian authorities undermine their commitments and responsibilities as a country, which is currently assuming the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)", added the Lithuanian Foreign Minister, whose country is holding the EU Presidency.

The events in Kiev from Tuesday night and Wednesday morning show that there are no signs of the anti-government protests quieting down.
