Russia is in favor of inviting Iran to participate in the Geneva-2 international conference on the resolution of the Syrian civil conflict.

"Russia and Iran share in many aspects the positions on the Syrian crisis. We see the major objective in the soonest stopping of the bloodshed and sufferings of the Syrian people by launching a wide inter-Syrian dialogue", reads the position of the Russian Foreign Ministry, cited by ITAR-TASS.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled to visit Teheran on Wednesday, to discuss the Syrian crisis, Iran's nuclear deal, next year's Caspian Summit in Astrakhan, as well as various aspects of trade and economic cooperation.

"We oppose methods of force for settling the Syrian crisis. We are convinced any outside interference in the Syrian home conflict without involvement of the UN Security Council will only dramatize the very complicated situation in that country, will add to the sufferings of its people, and will reduce chances for agreements between the Syrian sides", adds the Russian position.

Talks aimed at ending the war in Syria will take place in Geneva on January 22.

The so-called Geneva-2 conference is meant as a follow-up to one held in June 2012, where world powers issued a call for a Syrian transition government.
