Protesting Bulgarian Students Admit Attempts of Political Pressure

Politicians from former governments have attempted to exert pressure on protesting Bulgarian university students.

The statement was made before bTV by Ivaylo Dinev, one of the organizers and faces of the Eearly Risers students, who are demanding the resignation of the Socialist-endorsed government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski.

Dinev did not mention any names, but said some people connected to the caretaker government (which was appointed by President Rosen Plevneliev and acted between the resignation of the government of the centrist Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria party, GERB, in February, and the snap general elections on May 12 – editor's note) and people from GERB have offered help and joint actions.

The student's comments came on the heels of a statement of the President of Sofia University, Prof Ivan Ilchev, who said that there has been political interference in the "protest occupation," of the school, staged earlier in the month by the students.

"We have rejected all attempts of others to support us, and we remain united as students," said Dinev.

He further explained that some university professors, who are known to be politically active and members of political parties, have visited the "Early Risers," but only to congratulate them, without ever pressuring them.
