Former US Ambassador to Bulgaria, James Pardew, was on a private visit when he met with protesting students at Sofia University, current Ambassador, H.E. Marcie Ries explained.

The American diplomat said Pardew is free to act as he wishes in his capacity of common citizen.

Commenting on protests against the Socialist-endorsed government of Prime Minister, Plamen Oresharski, she stated that Bulgaria has a bright feature and she supported debates of citizens on serious problems in the country.

To words of a reporter that "Bulgaria is now divided," the Ambassador noted that this was a good reason for dialogue.

Marcie Ries spoke during a visit to 17th school "Damyan Gruev" in the capital Sofia. She attended a class and students asked her questions. The visit was part of the initiative "Together in Class for a Week" when students have the opportunity to meet in person prominent personalities.

James Pardew served as US Ambassador to Bulgaria from 2002 to 2005. He is now retired.
