The crisis in Syria is unique with three things, says Bulgarian EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva.

Speaking for the public Bulgarian National Radio on Sunday, Georgieva, who is the EU Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, said the first unique trait is in the religious roots of the conflict because this is a civil war where people kill each other not only over politics, but over religious adherences - Sunni Arabs against Alawites - the ethnic Arabs, and then there are Kurds and Christians.

The second unique trait stems from the fact the international community proved unable to unite on the way to solve it.

"The UN Security Council has not even passed a humanitarian resolution; they cannot agree that the massacre of civilians regardless of who has perpetrated it is a crime? And I am firm there is no place for such crime in the 21st century," said Georgieva.

According to her, the third unique characteristic was the tolerance for breaches in international humanitarian law.

Georgieva stated her office has provided assistance to Syrian refugees on numerous occasions so far and was fully prepared to continue to do so. She will discuss a possible refugee crisis with Bulgaria's political leadership on Monday.
