Bulgaria has stated its position on events in Syria many times since their very start and firmly opposes any acts of violence, according to the country's Foreign Minister, Kristian Vigenin.

In a special statement, issued Tuesday, Vigenin lists among the acts of violence the drastic violations of human rights, the huge number of refugees and people in distress, and the worsening humanitarian situation.

"Our country has been unwavering in calling for resolving the conflict through a large-scale national dialogue to include all political and civil formations. The stubborn lack of desire of the Syrian government to seek a political solution of the crisis leads to a constant escalation of violence. The last developments with the use of chemical weapons against civilians on August 21 are throwing Syria in a dangerous spiral of terror with unforeseeable consequences for the stability and security of the entire Middle East," the Minister writes.

He stresses that Bulgaria, as a member of the Convention banning chemical weapons, firmly opposes their use against anyone and anywhere.

Vigenin notes his country is strongly condemning the inhumane act of use of chemical weapons, leading to the massacre of thousands of innocent people because it is an unacceptable disregard for morals, humanism, and the norms of international law.

"The perpetrators must be subject to the most severe punishment," he states, adding Bulgaria continues to support and to participate in the international effort to find a political solution of the crisis.

"We call on Syrian authorities to provide immediate, full, and safe access to the UN expert team to the site of the incident in order to be able to establish the truth. We will follow the developments very carefully and we are prepared to contribute in any way possible for us to finding a solution of the crisis," Bulgaria's top diplomat points out.
