Bulgarian Environment Minister Iskra Mihaylova, reiterated somewhat her explanation about the mass dismissal of senior officials in her sector, saying they stemmed from delays in projects funded by the EU Operational Program Environment.

It was reported Friday that Mihaylova has dismissed a total of 23 senior officials, including the 16 directors of regional inspectorates, the directors of the three National Parks Rila, Pirin and Central Balkan, and the heads of the four basin directorates (Danube River Basin Directorate, Black Sea Basin Directorate, East Aegean Sea River Basin Directorate, West Aegean Sea River Basin Directorate).

Mihaylova spoke for the Bulgarian National Radio Sunday, saying nearly BGN 600 M from the Water sub-division have been redirected because they remained unabsorbed, and there was a serious threat that the same will happen with BGN 200 M for the capital Sofia's long-overdue waste plant.

"The main beneficiaries of the "Bio Diversity" sub-division are not NGOs, but the units of my Ministry. Several hundred millions of levs are slated for it, and they must be absorbed. We have contracts for the entire amount, but the work in progress is such that 90% of the projects are at risk," said she.
