Bulgaria is among the EU countries that are not considering an evacuation of its North Korea embassy staff, according to a report.

Bulgaria, Britain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Romania and Sweden are "not considering any evacuation at the moment," an unnamed EU official has told DPA. The official said there have been no signs of heightened military activity in Pyongyang.

"The situation is tense and potentially volatile ... but we don’t believe they’re on the brink of armed conflict," he noted, dismissing also any "imminent threat" in South Korea.

"But I would not say we’re 100 per cent sure. Any embassy has to have contingency plans."

The EU is weighing new sanctions on North Korea, focused mostly on hampering access to nuclear and missile technologies, the official told DPA.

However he did not rule out measures targeting North Korea’s Foreign Trade Bank if the need for pressure "becomes more acute."

Last week, North Korea asked foreign embassies based in Pyongyang to consider evacuating staff.

Pyongyang issued on Tuesday a warning to foreigners in South Korea, saying they should take steps to secure shelter or evacuation to protect themselves in the event of a conflict on the Korean Peninsula
