Bulgaria’s Dogan Retires from Parliament after 23 Years

Ahmed Dogan, the controversial former leader of Bulgaria’s ethnic Turkish party Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS), is not running for MP for the first time in 23 years.
The party presented Sunday its ballots for the upcoming general elections on May 12. As expected, Dogan was not among the party’s candidates.
Dogan had been a Member of Parliament ever since 1991. The controversial politician retired as leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms in January.
On January 19, 25-year-old Oktay Enimehmedov pointed a gun at Dogan as he was delivering a speech at the party conference in the capital Sofia. No shots were fired.
Two other senior DPS officials, Yunal Lyutvi, who has been a Member of Parliament since 1990, and Emel Etem, who has been in all Parliaments since 1997, have also decided not to run for lawmakers.
