NATO Ready to Intervene in Syria - Europe Commander

NATO is prepared to engage in what it has called a Libya-style scenario in Syria, revealed the Alliance's supreme commander for Europe, US Adm. James Stavridis.

"As we all know, the Syrian situation continues to become worse and worse and worse - 70,000 killed, a million refugees pushed out of the country, probably 2.5 million internally displaced," Stavridis said.

"No end in sight to a vicious civil war. The alliance has taken a position that it will follow the same sequence that was used in Libya," added the US admiral as quoted by the US Department of Defense.

Stavridis added that a NATO intervention will have to be sanctioned by a UN Security Council resolution, an agreement by regional actors, as well as the permission of the 28 NATO members.

"So within NATO channels, what we are focused on is defending that border with Syria," Stavridis explained, referring to Syria's border with NATO member Turkey.

"We've moved Patriot missiles down there to do that. We are looking at a wide range of operations, and we are prepared if called upon to be engaged as we were in Libya," confirmed the NATO commader.

The bloody civil war between heavily armed rebel forces and the regime of embattled President Bashar Al-Assad has entered in its second year.
