A subway train in the Bulgarian capital Sofia has hit a woman, who has been hospitalized in critical condition.

The woman fell on the railway tracks at the Lyulin Metro Station in Sofia, announced Tuesday the head of the Sofia Police Directorate Valeri Yordanov, who initially announced the victim was a girl as cited by the Focus news agency.

The engine driver spotted the woman on the tracks, and pulled the emergency brakes but the train nonetheless hit the woman.

The incident led the Sofia Metropolitan company to cancel the incoming and outgoing metro trains in the respective section.

The police are investigating the incident; the only fact that was announced by Yordanov was that the woman in question was accompanied by a young man.
