The data comes from a study of the National Center for Public Health, released Friday.

In 2011, 3 153 Bulgarians attempted suicide with 796 fatalities.

Women make more suicide attempts, but when committed by men, these attempts more often end up being fatal.

There is a very alarming trend among teenage girls, the experts from the Center note – in 2011, 394 teen girls attempted suicide, compared to 56 teen boys.

The main reasons are unrequited love, conflict with parents, low grades, and strong negative emotions.

The youngest Bulgarian, who attempted suicide, was a 7-year-old girl and the oldest – a 103-year-old man. It is unknown yet if there two cases were fatal. The experts are processing information on an additional 40 cases.

There have been 2 799 suicide attempts in 2010 with 783 fatalities and 2 712 attempts with 673 fatalities in 2009.

Globally, Bulgaria ranks 32nd in the world by the number of suicide attempts.
