Some 600 kg of illegal drugs have been intercepted since the start of 2012 at Bulgaria's main international airport, located in capital Sofia.

"There have been 35 cases of uncovered drugs that people attempted to traffic through Sofia International Airport since the beginning of the year," said local customs unit head Stefan Bakalov at a press conference Tuesday.

Bakalov explained that the drugs cover the full spectrum of prohibited recreational substances, with cocaine, amphetamines, metamphetamines, LSD, marijuana and hashish topping the list.

"Bulgaria is in Europe's top 5 in terms of illegal drugs interception. We have detained products worth millions of euro this year," said the Sofia Airport customs head.

Bakalov explained that customs authorities have it as their strategic goal to make Sofia International Airport an unattractive passing point for drug traffickers.

Tuesday's event, which was organized by Bulgaria's Customs Agency with the participation of the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), also featured a meeting of customs officers with pupils, during which the officers presented their work to the kids.
