Inclusion in the US Visa Waiver Program one of two major issues for Bulgaria in its ties with the USA, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nikolay Mladenov has told the new American Ambassador in Sofia Marcie Ries.

"I hope that we also can achieve progress on two issues important to Bulgarian society - the signing of an agreement on social security and addressing the visa issue, once the legal requirements have been met," Minister Mladenov said, as cited by the Foreign Ministry press service, as he welcomed Her Excellency who just took over.

"The relationship between Bulgaria and the United States is a relationship between partners and friends who share common values," Mladenov said after his first meeting with Ries.

He expressed Bulgaria's gratitude for the support it has received from the USA during its post-communist transition over the past 20 years.

Mladenov said Bulgaria and the United States share common priorities, not only bilaterally, but also as allies in NATO.

"We have common priorities in policy towards the countries of the Western Balkans, as well as a shared vision for the democratic future of the Middle East and North Africa," he said.
