Mitt Romney has accepted the Republican presidential nomination at the party's convention in Florida.

In his address he pledged "to restore the promise of America" and called on all Americans to overcome their disappointment from incumbent President, Barack Obama, and join him in the recovery of the US economy and the creation of 12 million of new job openings. He further vowed to work on uniting the divided country that had believed in Obama's promises and now had lost any hope they will materialize.

"America needs jobs, many jobs," said he.

Romney also spoke about his Mormon faith and his experience as a father.

The event ended with many members of the Romney family - his wife, five sons and their wives and most of his 18 grandchildren - on stage with him as thousands of balloons were released over the convention floor.

Republicans at the convention said they were confident of victory after the speech.

Obama's campaign manager Jim Messina said the address contained little substance.

"Much like the entire Republican Convention, Mitt Romney's speech tonight offered many personal attacks and gauzy platitudes, but no tangible ideas to move the country forward," he said.

Democrats have sought to depict Romney as a wealthy, elitist, tax-dodging, corporate raider and policy chameleon and he trails Obama in likeability.

The delegates listened earlier during the Convention to a number of Romney's friends and relatives depicting him as a warm and passionate individual in an attempt to dismiss accusations that he is opaque and distant.

Appearing on stage to pledge his support for Romney, Hollywood star Clint Eastwood raised eyebrows with an off-the-cuff monologue to an imaginary Obama in an empty chair, BBC reports Friday.

Referring to the President, the actor told a ecstatic audience: "When somebody does not do the job, you've got to let 'em go."

On Wednesday, Romney's running mate, Paul Ryan, pledged a "turnaround" for America, while attacking Obama.
