An electric automobile developed by students from Bulgaria's Technical University Sofia won the second prize for energy effectiveness at 2012's Shell Eco-Marathon Europe.

The Bulgarian prototype competed in the on-track UrbanConcept category and made a showing of 188.5 km/kWh in the "Battery electric award" competition.

First in the class was the team Electricar Solution from the French Lycee des metiers Charles Privat, with 262.6 km/kWh, who set a new record with their performance.

The other Bulgarian team, formed by students at the Technical University Varna, remained 41th in the "Gasoline (petrol) fuel awards," showing a perfomance of 96 km for 1 liter of fuel.

The two Bulgarian teams were among 119 teams qualified to participate in this year's Shell Eco-Marathon Europe, an event designed to promote innovations in the field of energy effective motors.

The competition took place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and for the first time it was carried out in open urban conditions.
