The construction of raised crosswalks in Bulgaria's capital Sofia will be launched within a month, according to Bogdan Milchev, head of the city's traffic police.

A total of 40 elevated crosswalks are expected to be built soon, Milchev has told reporters.

The new facilities will be 6 meters wide and between 8 and 10 centimeters above the roads' surface. The speed of cars passing through them is expected to decrease by 15 km/h to 20 km/h.

The elevated crosswalks will be constructed at places where high speeds can be achieved in a short time.

The long-term goal of the Sofia's municipality is for every sixth crosswalk in the city to become a raised one. There are approximately 600 crosswalks in the Bulgarian capital.
