Bulgarian Airline Fares to Get a Hike

There is a highly probable and imminent rise in the fares of airline tickets by Bulgarian companies in store, announced the Bulgarian Airlines Association Tuesday.

The Association gave a press conference, saying that "merciless competition" will necessitate the rise, which however will not be proportional to the rise in jet fuel prices.

Exceedingly high costs covered by Bulgarian airlines have to be covered somehow, said the union of air carriers.

The Bulgarian Airlines Association also presented data for air traffic in Bulgaria during 2011 (except data from Plovidv airport).

The number of air passengers has grown with 7.3% on a yearly basis, reaching 6.5 M. Bulgarian airlines have flown 2.1 M of them.

International air passengers have increased with 12.4% to 4 M, with 3.1 M of them being flown through Sofia Airport.

Bulgarian air carriers have flown some 714,000 international passengers, which makes for a 22.7% share.

9 companies are members of the Bulgarian Airline Association: national carrier Bulgaria Air, BHAir, Sofia Flight Training, Aviostart, Bulgarian Air Charter, Air Scorpio, CarGo Air, Heli Air, and Air Via.
