Europe must urgently take up measures to enliven the economy and boost employment if it is to emerge from the crisis, said Party of European Socialists president Sergey Stanishev.

Sunday the PES and Bulgarian Socialist Party leader is off to Brussels where he will chair a meeting of PES European PMs ahead of the important European Council Monday, where EU leaders are expected to flesh out the details of the new EU fiscal compact.

"European socialists deplore the highly unspecific proposals by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French Nicolas Sarkozy to combat unemployment," said Stanishev at a press conference in Sofia Sunday.

"What they are saying sounds rather as a lullaby to lull away people's attention from what really is going on - massive austerity, deregulation, liberalization," commented the socialist leader.

According to Stanishev, the EU has the resources until 2014 to bring 2 M young Europeans out of unemployment.

He added that PES have data that youth unemployment costs the EU some EUR 2 B per week.
