Second Sofia Car Arson Suspect Knew Victims

Crime | December 16, 2011, Friday // 18:25|  views

29-year old Yulian Kovachki, who was arrested on suspicion of carrying out the recent spate of arsons in Sofia, was revealed to have known the majority of the victims, Sofia police said on Friday.

Earlier the same day Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov told journalists that Kovachki had confessed to 12 arsons in which a total of 25 vehicles were affected.

Almost all of the cars were torched in the Mladost and Hadzhi Dimitar residential districts in the capital and the 29-year-old suspect lives in Mladost-2.

The cars were set ablaze with a highly inflammable liquid, the origins of which Kovachki refused to reveal.

Questionings revealed that he started torching cars out of personal dissatisfaction and to avenge injustices he felt he had suffered.

Kovachki has a criminal record for thefts, hooliganism and drunk driving.

The police say he is not a stereotypical pyromaniac because in some cases he has called neighbors of the victims or the 112 hotline and has even participated in the flame quenching.

The tip-off about him was received by the 7th Regional Police Directorate in Sofia around ten days ago.

No connection has been established between him and the 33-year-old Vladislav Nikolov-Kukata arrested on Tuesday.

Less than an hour after the arrest, five cars went up in flames in Sofia's Student city.

Police say the arsons were most likely carried out by different groups with different motives.

Sofia witnessed over 30 car arsons over the past month and a half.
