Bulgaria's government has expressed formal concerns over the storming of the British Embassy in Iran's capital Tehran by student protesters.

The assault on the UK Embassy in Tehran happened on Tuesday, during an anti-British protest rally of Iranian university students in an incident reminding of the 1979 storming of the US Embassy in Tehran after the Islamic Revolution.

"Bulgaria is highly concerned over the incident at the Embassy of Great Britain in Iran during which demonstrators invaded the territory of the diplomatic compound," said the special statement of the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vesela Cherneva, which describes the invasion as "violent".

The Bulgarian government further expressed hopes that Iran will investigate the incident properly, stressing the immunity of diplomatic and consular representations under the Vienna Convention.

Bulgaria recognizes the measures taken by the Iranian authorities with respect to the incident but stresses that the Vienna Convention needs to be implemented strictly.
